    Description

    Pre-WWI WWII Austro-Hungary 1 Krone Czernowitz
    A very rare notgeld from Czernowitz, Bukowina (present day Chernivtsi, Ukraine).  Likely issued just before the outbreak of WWI - 1910-ish.
    Czernowitz, Bukowina was to become part of Romania after WWI as a result of the post-WWI breakup of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (Treaty of Trianon, signed in Paris in 1920). In late June - early July 1940, Soviet troops marched into North Bucovina and Bessarabia, only to retreat in June 1941 when Nazi German Wehrmacht conquered the area in the early stages of the Operation Barbarossa - their invasion of the Soviet Union. In March of 1944, the Soviets "liberated" Cernauti and since that time, Chernivtsi was incorporated into the Soviet Republic of Ukraine, and then, after the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union, the independent state of Ukraine.
