    Description

1906 rare posted undivided back postcard entitled "U. S. Barracks, Fort Mansfield, Watch Hill, R. I.".
Watch Hill is an upper class community in the southwestern section of Westerly, RI. Fort Mansfield was an army base that protected Fisher's Island Sound and the mouth of the Pawcatuck River. The fort had a short life from 1899-1909. There was a fatal flaw in the design whereby its batteries could not defend against ships firing at the fort from along the RI coast.
This unique postcard was sent by one of the soldiers stationed there. At the top of the postcard it reads, "This is where we live." He has written "Guard House" under the building to the far left, "Barracks" under the building next to the guard house, and an X over the building where he was probably billeted. If you look closely you can see soldiers on the building porches.
The condition of the postcard is described above.
